Letters from George Bancroft [manuscript] 1838, 1873, 1877.

Bancroft accepts a lecture engagement, describes the current system of parliamentary goverment in Germany, comments on the good fortune of his graduating class, and requests information on the Massachusetts government of 1785 and specifically on the proposal of James Bowdoin for a convention to create a national constitution. He also desires more information regarding the inter-state movement for a navigation act and requests some Massachusetts state department papers. Correspondents are P.T. Bigelow and Henry Bailey Peirce.

George Bancroft was an American historian and statesman, and an active promoter of secondary education both in his home state and at the national level. As U. S. Secretary of the Navy under James K. Polk, Bancroft established the Naval Academy at Annapolis and later served as U.S. Minister to Great Britain (1846-1849), Prussia (1867-1871), and the German Empire (1871-1874).
